Roll and Remove w Candy Corn

We played a math game with candy corn today.  Each child had a game board with 11 spots covered with candy corn.  They had to roll the dice and remove the candy corn on the number they rolled.  When all the candy was removed they got to eat it.

Pumpkin Investigation

Today we investigated a pumpkin!  We all got to look at it, feel it, and discuss what it looked like and felt like.  Then we got to estimate how many ribs it has and how many cubes tall it is.  We had some really good estimates.

Red Ribbon Week

Tomorrow our theme day is "Slip into a healthy lifestyle"  The kids can bring slippers to wear in the classroom.  They must wear tennis shoes to school.
Thursday is "Team up and do the right thing"  Wear any kind of sports jersey or shirt to school.
Friday is "Say Boo to Drugs"  wear Halloween shirt or colors to school.

Don't forget Book Character Parade Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.  Children should wear their costume over their clothes.

Please remember to send a snack each day with your child.  We have had some forgetful friends a lot lately.

Theme: Fall...Halloween!
Reading:  This week we will enjoy fall stories!  We will identify characters, setting, and problem.  We will retell using picture cards.  We will utilize the cognitive skill of mental imaging while listening to stories.  This skill will help us add details to our writing!

Writing:  This week we will make literacy connections to stories while using these stories as a basis for our own individual book making/writing! We will focus on use of capitals, periods, and appropriate spacing as we write.  We will continue to incorporate sound words (Swoosh!) during writer’s workshop, as well as adding other illustrative details to make our writing more interesting. We will begin the idea of non fiction writing as we discover the life cycle of a pumpkin.

Word Study: We will focus on the letter sounds of K and L.

Social Studies:  finishing US Symbols and creating a map of our neighborhood

Homework: Read 20 minutes every night.

Week of Oct. 20-24, 2014
 
Thank you for coming to the RCE Fall Festival.  It was a huge success.  It was fun to hear the kids talk about it today!
Reminders for this week:
1.  Keep sending your Pete the Cat reading logs each Monday.  If you do not get your log back today, your child is finished!  Reading party details will be forthcoming as we get closer to December.  There is still time….so keep reading.
2. If you haven’t sent your Blessington Farm permission slip back to your teacher, do so ASAP.  If you are joining us, let your teacher know and she will send home a chaperone form for you to complete/return.
3.  Complete and return the Dogs of Character permission slips, as well.
4. Thursday and Friday are noon dismissal days.  We do eat lunch at school, but everything happens earlier J

Reading:  This week we will enjoy Halloween and Fall stories!  We will identify characters and setting.  We will retell using story arcs.  At literacy stations we will complete our nursery rhymes and fairy tales unit with a variety of activities, such as sequencing, sentence construction, and writing
 
Writing:  This week we will make literacy connections to Halloween stories while using these stories as a basis for our own individual book making/writing! We will focus on use of capitals, periods, and appropriate spacing as we write.  We will incorporate sound words (Swoosh!) during writer’s workshop. We continue to focus on using illustrations to better tell our story.

Raz Kids

Our Raz Kids is all set up and I showed the kids how to use it.  The teacher username is hanlend.  Once they go in they can find their name.  There is a Raz Kids app you get can for your ipad, we have it at home and it is great. The books are at your kids level so they should be able to read pretty independently.

Writer's Workshop

We have been talking about what writers do and what we see in books.  Today we started our books about Fall.  We just worked on the cover today and are taking it slow because it is our first book.

Reading:  We will have fun with Fall stories, focusing on story elements.  We will also sequence and retell, which are two very important reading skills!
Writing:  This week we will make literacy connections to Fall books for our own individual book making/writing! We will learn the routines of Writer’s Workshop.  Our authors will be very busy!  We will write about colors we see, fall, etc.  Hooray!

Yesterday we sorted and measured some of our shoes with bear counters and unifix cubes.  Today, the kids got to trace and measure their own shoe and write how many bears or cubes long it is.  Then compare with their friends.

Scholastic Book Orders

The September order has been shipped and should be here this week.  Thanks for ordering.  The October flyer has lots of great books and some new Halloween ones. 
The due date for Oct. orders is Friday, Oct. 17th so we can get the Halloween books in time for Halloween.

Theme: We will continue with Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales
Reading:  We will continue to explore the wonderful world of nursery rhymes and fairy tales.  We will identify rhyming words, characters and setting.  We will also sequence and retell, which are two very important reading skills!
Writing:  This week we will make literacy connections to nursery rhymes and fairy while using these familiar texts as a basis for our own individual book making/writing!
 
Word Wall Words:  REVIEW: a, is, red, green, yellow, orange, purple, blue, write, pink, brown, black, the, in. NEW WORDS FOR THE WEEK:  it and the
Word Study: We will focus on the letter sounds of C and H.
 
Math: This week we will practice measuring using non-standard units of measure.  We will discuss longer and shorter.  We will also continue estimating.

Social Studies:  We will begin to look at maps, and discuss map symbols. We will also learn about Columbus and his adventures.
 
Homework: Read 20 minutes every night.
Optional Activities:
·       Monday:  Make a list of things that start with C & H
·       Tuesday: Take a handful of junk/tiny treasures.  Sort them into sets and describe how you sorted to mom or dad.
·       Wednesday: Write a simple sentence using it and the.  Do you have a capital and a period? 
·       Thursday:  Tell about what you have learned about maps!  Why do we use them?

·       Friday: Bring back your library books, reading log, and home reader bag!  Remember there is no school on Monday!
